Cause​

The upstream provisioning provider rejected this business name as a duplicate of one it has already registered. Business names are not globally unique in Payments AI itself — every downstream tool keys on merchantId, and two merchants can share a name — but the upstream provider can still reject a specific name at create time and surface it as business_name_taken.

This is not the same as a partial dual-provision retry. If one backend already created the merchant, reuse the same merchantId, name, and email. If neither backend created the merchant, pick a different name for this call.

How to fix​

Call create_merchant_account again with a different business name (for example append your company initials, product name, or a short suffix). Do not retry with the same name. If two merchants end up sharing a display name in your own records, disambiguate them by merchantId, not by the name.
